Host John Newland directed each episode of the supernaturally-themed, classic television program ONE STEP BEYOND. First airing in 1959, ONE STEP BEYOND dramatized purportedly true stories of eerie, supernatural events, and was amongst the first television shows to both investigate mysterious occurrences (such as the later programs IN SEARCH OF and UNSOLVED MYSTERIES) as well as take a tone of horror and suspense (like the more well-known TWILIGHT ZONE and THE OUTER LIMITS). ONE STEP BEYOND - 8 DVD SET contains 33 episodes of the classic series.
The Mayor of Casterbridge (DVD)
Alan Bates (GOSFORD PARK) stars as Michael Henchard in this television miniseries of Thomas Hardy's MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE. When past misdeeds, namely selling his wife and daughter at a country fair, return to haunt him, Henchard's prosperous lifestyle comes under threat. As he attempts to right his wrongs he descends into an ever increasing downward spiral of destruction, with fascinating implications and complications along the way. This British miniseries was adapted for television by English playwright Dennis Potter.
